What is Follicular Unit Transplant?
Harvesting of the Strip
During this step, the surgeon uses a scalpel to remove a long section of healthy hair from the donor area. This section of the scalp is then skillfully stitched back together to minimize the appearance.
Extraction & Harvesting
During this step, our transplant physician takes the extracted strip of the scalp to be cleaned, carefully sectioned apart, and sorted according to the number of hair follicles in each follicular unit.
Graft Implantation
In this step, the surgeon creates small incisions and begins implanting the grafts into the scalp. Follicular units are then transplanted one by one with attention to direction, angle, and density in mind.

Learn More About FUT
Follicular Unit Transplant (also known as Follicular Unit Transfer) is a procedure in which small clusters of hairs or ‘follicular units’ are removed from the donor area of hair (the fringe of hair around your head) in a strip. Then, they and inserted into the recipient area (or bald area) of your head.
These are naturally occurring units which if transplanted well, will replicate this natural growth in the recipient area of the scalp. In other words, there will not be any unsightly clumps or linear strings of hairs as seen in older “hair plug” techniques of days passed.
This is a minimally invasive procedure with a brief recovery period and few complications. However, it takes a great deal of experience and skill on the part of the surgeon which is acquired, only after years of practice.
The difference between this and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is that FUT involves removing a strip of follicular units, whereas FUE involves removing follicular units directly from the donor site.

FUT Frequently Asked Questions
Is an FUT Procedure Right for Me?
Typically, a Follicular Unit Transplant procedure would be ideal for patients on a budget or those who don’t plan to wear their hair in a short style. This is because the scar in the back of the scalp will be camouflaged or hidden by longer strands of hair.
How is the Scalp Stitched Back Together?
The linear scar can vary in length depending on the number of grafts required and the density of hair. Typically, our hair transplant doctor will utilize a “baseball stitch” to hide this scar and create a more natural appearance after you have healed up.
Will I Heal Quickly From My FUT Procedure?
The length of time needed to heal your surgical wound will vary from patient to patient. On average, your surgical wound will close within 7 to 10 days. Typically, stitches used for closure will be removed in our office at, or around, 10 days.
How Many Hairs Can Be Transplanted?
At Best Hair Transplant, our hair transplant physician will make specific recommendations for each patient depending on the extent of his or her hair loss. We offer FUT transplant options ranging from 1500-3000 grafts during a single session.
How Long Does Will My Results Last?
Results usually last a lifetime as FUT uses your own hair from the permanent zone. However, you may notice some natural thinning of the donor zone as you age. While hormonal changes impact hair prone to balding, this shouldn’t affect the transplants.
Will Insurance Pay for My Hair Transplant?
Very rarely. Hair transplant surgeries are generally considered to be cosmetic in nature. Therefore, it is unlikely your insurance company will help pay for it. However, should your hair loss occur as a result of illness or injury, coverage may be possible.
